Bite-sized lava cakes are not a myth, they exist in many flavours at Smoulder

Lava cakes – warm, gooey and decadent cakes that take you to heaven with one bite.
Our only gripe? They are usually meant for sharing and you can only have one flavour. So, when we came across Smoulder, which specialises in multi-flavoured molten chocolate cakes in bite sizes, we were sold.
Founder Peter Cai and his college mates were studying in London and, once in a while, they’d indulge in a lava cake in a café. They thought of a scenario where one could enjoy an entire box while lounging in pyjamas at home.
“We decided all cakes should taste like that. But due to the high exchange rate back then, we could only have it once in a blue moon. We joked about starting a business and, in 2009, we talked about it again and took three years to realise our dream,” says Peter.
Through the process of trial and error, Peter managed to recreate the recipe in a bite-sized form.
“Ideally, you’ll be satisfied with one. But you still can and want to go for another piece,” he says. Smoulder uses Belgian chocolate in its cakes, and showcases flavours such as White Chocolate Matcha, Milk Chocolate Rum & Raisin, White Chocolate Lemon, White Chocolate Pistachio and an array of dark chocolate molten cakes.
They also customise the lava cakes according to the festive seasons such as for Halloween, red velvet lava cakes for National Day and even molten core mooncakes during the Mid-Autumn Festival.
Smoulder also imports most of their flavouring from Europe, such as from Spain, France, Italy and Germany, save for the matcha from Japan. Retailing at $2.80 a piece and $24 for a box of nine, indulging in these sweet treats with friends or even for yourself is much easier. Smoulder also delivers for orders above $200.
