A wrap full of pleasure in this popiah

Head to Uncle Lim Crispy Snack for a satisfying popiah

The different flavours of the popiah ingredients came together nicely within the chewy skin.

In my quest for delicious popiah, a few names kept popping up — they include popular stalls such as Good Chance Popiah Eating House and Qi Ji.

I’ve tried them both and loved the former for its Hokkien-style popiah that comes with luxurious toppings of crab meat and prawn.

Heartland Popiah

Nonetheless, in my bid to suss out the lesser known gems, I chanced upon Uncle Lim Crispy Snack. Located in Ang Mo Kio Central’s S11 food court, the unassuming stall offers a good variety of traditional fried snacks such as fried butterfly bun, goreng pisang (banana fritters) and tapioca cake.

To the left of the stall is a popiah station where each order is made on the spot. The ingredients looked ordinary enough and there weren’t special add-ons like prawns.

Thin Skin, Generous Ingredients

As I took my first bite, the freshness of the ingredients came through in the moist yet not soggy filling of turnip, garlic, egg, peanut and other condiments. In comparison to the ‘renowned’ popiah stalls mentioned earlier, the filling was less wet but equally flavourful.

The pleasant sweetness of the bean paste sauce was a good counterbalance to the savoury turnip fillings. In addition, there were hints of haebi (spicy dried shrimp) as well as crunchiness from chopped peanuts and fried crullers.

The different flavours of the ingredients came together nicely within the chewy skin. At $1.80 per popiah, I’ll be sure to return.
