Enjoy the best of the Japanese summer, with Teppan Kappou Kenji’s refreshed seasonal omakase menu.
With summer in the air, it’s now the perfect season for grills and seafood, and the lightness that Japanese cuisine is well-known for. Treat yourself and indulge in a lovely omakase meal at Teppan Kappou Kenji, located amongst the row of Japanese restaurants just behind Orchid Hotel. A restaurant created by Executive Chef Kenji Okumura; Teppan Kappou Kenji serves up modern Japanese dishes that feature fresh and high quality seasonal ingredients, such as lobsters air-flown from Mie Prefecture, A5-grade Ohmi Wagyu and artisan gourmet creations such as glutinous rice, and hand-made gourmet tofu.
Even better; you don’t have to break the bank for a meal here! The lunch omakase menu ranges from S$50-80, while the dinner omakase menus are a little pricier but still affordable, from S$60-150++. Meanwhile, a la carte items and seasonal specials range from S$6 for appetisers, to S$40 for hotpots with premium ingredients such as Japanese lobsters and wagyu beef. Currently, they are also running a limited-time-only promotional special: three grilled seafood items for a value-for-money S$18!
This season, Chef Kenji will be serving up a curated selection of dishes that aims to showcase the best of Hokkaido and Miyazaki. Expect seasonal dishes such as the Wagyu Beef Kamameshi, where gorgeously fatty slices of wagyu are slow-cooked in a special claypot; grilled Ayu (sweetfish); and of couse, an overall creative omakase experience – especially exciting when you sit at the counter! Pair your meal with sake, whiskey or shochu for a complete meal.
If an omakase menu isn’t for you; no worries! Teppan Kappou Kenji offers up amazing a la carte delights from their Grand Menu as well – made from seasonal and premium produce, and at affordable prices too, you won’t be missing out!
Start off your meal with the Seafood Aburi Salad with Japanese-style “Caesar” dressing ($13): a refreshing salad of seared salmon, seabass and tuna, and seasonal Japanese vegetables; all tossed in a piquant house-made dressing. We enjoyed the freshness of the fish, as well as the sweetness of the various vegetables paired with the tangy spice of the sauce (thank you, wasabi) – check out that lovely sprig of ice plant!
Sashimi fans, do try the Seasonal Fish Carpaccio ($18)! Made with hamachi (Japanese amberjack) and served with black truffle and garnished with a fresh perilla leaf; this is a lovely, aromatic dish that brings out the freshness of the sashimi and fragrance of the few herbs and seasonings used.
Japanese Oysters from Mie prefecture ($22, 3 pcs) – a must-try for oyster enthusiasts, and even those who shun from the coveted molluscs. Here, these pearls of the sea are coated with a light batter, grilled til crisp on the teppan, and served in their shells with a tongue-smackingly tangy ponzu dressing. Fragrant with a delightful char, and paired with the sweet-sour freshness of the dressing, these oysters were wonderfully addictive.
We loved the Gyu Katsu ($22), where luscious Australian tenderloin is battered and seared til medium-rare. Juicy, savoury, and with the perfect amount of panko crisp; this satisfied our inner carnivores at an affordable price!
Another equally delicious dish for the meat-lovers, would be the Stewed Wagyu Hamburg ($15). Served piping-hot in a mini-claypot, chunks of wagyu patty are lightly seared first on the teppan, before being served in a hearty tomato-based stew with an onsen egg and seasonal vegetables such as pumpkin, shiitake mushrooms, zucchini and bell peppers. Have this with a bowl of steamed rice for a filling and comforting meal!

Take your pick from a range of seafood options, including the above-mentioned Japanese oysters. We had the Tiger Prawn, Hokkaido Scallop and Tuna – the former being our favourite, sweet, succulent, and so very moreish!
If you’re coming with friends, or even with a date, we highly recommend getting the Seasonal Kamameshi ($15 for small, $28 for large)! Inspired by our local claypot rice, this dish is also known as kettle rice; and comprises of 5 types of Japanese rice that have been cooked in Chef Kenji’s special fish bone broth. This came generously topped with Kinmedai (Splendid Alfonsion), Tai (Seabream), Sawara (Spanish Mackerel), Kanpachi (Yellowtail), Maguro (Tuna), Tako (Octopus), as well as Ikura for bursts of flavour. Rich with umami and the wholesome goodness of the sea; this is a dish you would want to have bowl after bowl of!
Japan is also well-known for its bounteous crops of fruits, so what better what to end off your meal than with a bowl of Seasonal Fruits ($24)? Served in a gorgeous ceramic bowl, this fruit medley allows you to taste a wide variety; from the famed Shizuoka musk melon that spread a soft sweetness across our tongues, to the fragrance of the peach and fig that lingered delicately; and the delicious burst of sweetness from the grape. Most intriguing (although not a fruit!) was the Japanese bayberry wine jelly, gorgeously crimson and aromatic with the scent of cider.
