Restaurant Hoshigaoka revamps menu to provide affordable and tasty new dishes
Established in 1972 at Apollo Hotel, Restaurant Hoshigaoka is one of the pioneers of the Japanese food scene in Singapore.
The new menu builds on old favourites and introduces fresh, creative dishes cooked up by Chef Christopher Teng, with the guidance of Iron Man Chef Heman. Trained by classical Japanese chefs, Chef Christopher adds local flair to quintessential Japanese dishes in Restaurant Hoshigaoka’s menu.
The food is not the only thing to get a refresh, the interior of the restaurant has also been refitted to cater especially to families and friends. There is also a separate section that can be booked for corporate events in the SAFRA Toa Payoh Outlet.
New menu highlights
Chilled Tofu with Pitan Sauce, a Singaporean twist to a Japanese appetizer.
Start your meal with a some of Restaurant Hoshigaoka’s new appetisers. I especially enjoyed the Pitan Tofu ($7.80), a refreshing mix of chilled silky tofu and a smooth creamy century egg sauce topped with flying fish roe and spring onion.
Aburi Crackling Salmon Roll, a family favourite.
Lovers of mentaiko will also like Aburi Crackling Salmon Sushi Roll ($18.80). Fried salmon skin is wrapped with avocado and cucumber providing a delightful crunch. The sushi roll is then topped with sliced salmon and mentai mayonnaise before being lightly torched. The result is a smokey and savoury sushi roll that the whole family will love.
Gyu Nikumi, Peranakan flavours using Japanese techniques.
For your main course, the Gyu Nikumi ($9.80) is a must-try. Chef Christopher braises beef shin for 8 hours with buah keluak and spices, resulting in an extremely tender and flavourful piece of meat that falls effortlessly off the bone.
Hoshigaoka Zen, a value for money set that feeds two.
People who want quantity without compromising on quality should also try the Hoshigaoka Zen Set ($35.80). You’ll get an assortment of 11 items including a generous slab of grilled miso cod fish, sweet and tender stewed pork soft bone and crispy tempura moriawase. The set is big enough to be shared between two people.
Perfect for families
The new menu is excellent value for money with a mix of old Japanese classics and newer Singaporean Japanese fusion dishes. Restuarant Hoshigaoka also has an extensive kid’s menu featuring bentos that are served in cute boxes guaranteed to leave a smile on your child’s face.
