First Look: DreamWorks KouKou Café Has Rolled Into Singapore

Dine with Trolls, Shrek and Po from Kungfu Panda at this new character-themed cafe

Like the Nasi Lemak trend, the longevity of character-themed cafés seems to be apparent, spawning mainstays like DC Comics Super Heroes Café, and fleeting pop-ups such as the recently-concluded Minions Café. Because living in an Instagram world, the food's aesthetics must be comparable to its taste, right?

We've already entered the adorable realm of Sanrio's Hello Kitty and Miffy, and the pages of superhero comics; and finally, we get to revel in the world of DreamWorks studios with the launch of DreamWorks KouKou Café, touted to be the first in the world.

Kou is the direct pronunciation of 'mouth' in Chinese. The café is named that to showcase the DreamWorks characters, downsized to little cute dumpling-shaped buns, which can be eaten one mouthful at a time.

Launched on 3 March 2018, the café highlights five animation films of Kung Fu Panda, Madagascar, Shrek, How To Train Your Dragon and Trolls in its sprawling space, complete with wooden dome-shaped booths in the backdrop of walls awash with the animated characters. There's even a giant installation for you to get your photo taken with.

Of course, feast your eyes and fill your bellies with a whole lineup of character-themed food and drinks. Aside from its signature character-shaped buns, the café has cleverly used sticky rice that moulded to take the form of fan favourites such as Toothless from How To Train Your Dragon, and the penguins from Madagascar. The mains are actually quite decent, as reflected by Never Leave A Man Behind ($22.50) which offered a perfectly grilled salmon. Skip the drinks though - the Pretty In Pink ($7.50) was indeed pretty to look at, but its berry tea was watered down and its vanilla soft serve tasted rather artificial.
