Archipelago Brewery has recently launched a new tea-infused beer, a first in the local craft beer scene.

Light-bodied and crisp on the finish, the Limited Edition Yuzucha Beer is a balance of aromas and flavours. Categorised as a Kölsch, a pale German ale that is warm fermented and aged at cold temperatures, it has low hop flavours and slightly more prominent sweet citrusy Yuzu notes, as well as a subtle tea finish.

With two new ingredients involved, this brew proved to be a challenge for the Archipelago Brewery brewing team.

Teabag Style

Master Brewer Robert Beck said, “The style of beer that was chosen for this brew is very different from our mainstay beers. A special yeast was flown in from America, and to add a more Asian twist, we sourced hops from Japan.”

“The tea and the Yuzu were added in ‘teabag’ style at the conditioning part of the process,” he explained.

This innovative brew is made possible with Gryphon Tea Company collaboration. The tea specialist assisted in identifying the appropriate tea and flavours that would work for this Limited Edition beer. The tea used is a blend of Japanese Kukicha Green Tea and Kochi Yuzu.

Beck added, “The Limited Edition is a great way of challenging our brewers and giving them a chance to express their passion. It is also our way of introducing the entire spectrum of craft beers to our consumers. With every new flavour and pint, we want our consumers to discover a new experience.”

LIMITED availability

Archipelago Brewery produces three to four Limited Edition beers a year to complement the four mainstay variants, and the Limited Editions are only available at Archipelago Brewery concept outlets.

The Limited Edition Yuzucha Beer is available now and will be featured at Beer Fest Asia 2014, from 12 to 15 Jun.
