The latest Japanese food enclave to open its doors may be nicely tucked away at Shaw Centre's Food Republic, but is no less of a gem.

Housing a cosy cluster of five concept stalls, Japan Foods Garden offers the opportunity to savour a variety of affordable dishes at a go — all the better for lunch or dinner khakis to share.

Despite the no-frills setting, the quality of the dishes, some of which hail straight from the Land of the Rising Sun, left us considerably impressed.

We ate our way through all five stalls and couldn't help but play flavourites.

Must-try:  Curry Rice Black

Be prepared to squeal in delight when a plateful of bear-shape rice swimming in curry is served before you. Designed to entice both kids and adults alike, Bear’s Curry Café serves up moreish plates of Japanese curry in two levels of spice.

For something a little special, try the Curry Rice Black ($11.80). The black curry is tinted with charcoal powder and loaded with curry powder for a slow burning heat that was pretty manageable by our standards.

Diners can enjoy the curry with an adorable rice bear or a fried pork cutlet. The standard Curry Rice ($10.80) and Katsu Curry ($13.80) are mildly spicy and suitable for most palates, while the little ones can tuck into the Kid’s Curry ($9.80), which is served with a smiling rice teddy.
