We love our spicy foods. From chilli crabs to fiery stews and even Szechuan mala (literally translating to numbingly spicy) hot pots, we’re game to try them all.

Here are five restaurants that have made a name for themselves thanks to their signature fiery dishes.

Question is, can you handle the heat?

Must-Try: Mala soup base

Given the long queues outside Hai Di Lao Hotpot every day, we know Singaporeans love their steamboat. The must-try here is the mala soup base, and the best part is that you can customise how spicy you’d like it to be.

Just as signature and no less interesting is the tomato soup base. This mildly spicy umami-filled broth is a general crowd-pleaser and provides an interesting contrast to the numbing spiciness of the mala soup.

Also noteworthy are the new dishes that Hai Di Lao has come up with recently. For example, Ocean Clam ($20) and Golden Chestnuts ($10) may sound unusual but both go swimmingly well with spicy soup.
