Gary Pallister is a Manchester United and England legend – read his thoughts on United now

Manchester United legend Gary Pallister was a rock in one of the leanest defences in the history of the English Premier League (EPL). Few would forget his rock-solid partnership with Steve Bruce in the heart of the United defence.

Gary was recently in town with the EPL championship trophy that United won last season. This is part of the “United Trophy Tour” by DHL that covers a total of 25 countries around the world.

Accompanying the tour was a mini Manchester United exhibition of memorabilia (from the Old Trafford Museum) from various vital moments in United’s history.

We spoke to the big man on life after United and his thoughts on the club.

Hi, Gary. pleased to meet you. What’ve you been up to?

Well, I’ve mainly been a football pundit for BBC and ITV. I must say, it’s a great job.

Which is your favourite moment with United?

Winning the FA Cup in 1990 was special. It was the first major trophy United had won in a while. The double in ’94 was also special.

Winning the UEFA Cup Winner’s Cup and UEFA Super Cup in 1991 was also fantastic. It was the beginning of our European exploits.

You were a key part of one of the leanest defences in the league. Which do you think is the best defence in the Premiership now?

Chelsea has a solid defence, with the likes of Terry, Luiz, Ivanovic, Cahill and Cole. Manchester City also has a great defence and is a team to watch.

Any plans to go into football management?

I know some of the guys are going into that but I don’t think that’s for me. I’m happy with what I’m doing now.

What makes you happy?

My kids and my family. They are the ones who keep me going.

What are your sentiments on United’s footballing hopes for the future?

This is a difficult moment but I’m sure the lads will bounce back. They just need a bit of time to get used to things after Alex Ferguson.

If United were to buy another player, who do you think they need?

Well, any team could use Lionel Messi with all his skill. He’s a brilliant player and I just think of what he could do for the team.

But we’ve got a number of great players now and we’ll have to give them some time to see how well they can work together.

The United Trophy Tour by DHL recently ended its five-month journey in Oslo, Norway.
