What a difference a year makes.

In April, we queued 45 minutes for a taste of the wildly-popular Hong Kong Soya Sauce Chicken Rice & Noodles stall, never expecting it’d eventually be awarded one Michelin Star.

Soon after, the chef behind the hawker stall, Chan Hon Meng was catapulted to fame alongside his tasty offerings.

Now, diners can get a taste of the world’s cheapest Michelin-starred meal at his new outlet. Affectionately named Hawker Chan as homage to his humble roots, the quick service restaurant will serve the same soya sauce chicken rice and noodle dishes as his Michelin-starred stall.

We took a sneak peek of the outlet prior to its scheduled opening on 18 Nov and here’s our verdict.

Situated at Smith Street, just a street away from Chef Chan’s original hawker stall, the air-conditioned restaurant is made for dining in comfort.

We’re also a fan of their char siew, which is wonderfully caramelized and charred on the edges.

Fast food, just as good

Opened in partnership with Hersing Culinary, Hawker Chan features a digital kiosk where one can easily order their dishes and make payment, before collecting from the counter.

‘Fast-food style’ dining aside, there’s no doubt about the culinary efforts that will continue to go into this new outlet.

Chef Chan’s unique soya sauce chicken recipe involves five hours of preparation, which is evident when you sink your teeth into the tender and smooth chicken, glazed ever so lightly with soya sauce.

We’re also a fan of their char siew, which is wonderfully caramelized and charred on the edges.

In time to come, diners can expect more exciting dishes to be added on the menu.
