We haven’t been this impressed by a Korean restaurant in awhile

It was a Monday morning. When I left my house, the sun was still up and I didn’t think twice about bringing an umbrella. It was only when I stepped out of the MRT station did it begin to pour. Cold and shaking in the office from the rain, there was nothing I craved more than a piping hot bowl of soup.
For lunch, I made my way to Masizzim, a Korean restaurant that specialises in stews. It would be an understatement to say that the meal reinvigorated my body and soul. From my first spoonful of spicy soup, there was a rush of warmth and comfort no other meal could have possibly delivered on that dreadful Monday.
The star dish as Masizzim is their meat stews. Choose between beef, pork, chicken and their latest addition, seafood; each pot comes brimming with ingredients slow-cooked in a secret-recipe sauce. The stews have four levels of spice for diners to choose from and the beef and pork versions even come with a non-spicy option.
The new Spicy Seafood Stew ($36.80) is packed full of fresh prawns, mussels, crayfish and squid brought to a boil in a clam-based broth that is naturally sweet and salty. The spice isn’t too overwhelming, allowing the flavours of the seafood to still shine.
For people who enjoy richer flavours, opt for the Spicy Seafood Beef Stew ($38.80) instead. The rendition adds some beef rib sauce to the stew, making it deeper and more robust. The tender chunks of Australian beef short rib included will also make sure the meat lover in your group is taken care of.
Each serving comes with mixed grain rice that can be shared between two. Our advice is to top up $6 and get the Crab Meat & Roe Rice Ball (U.P. $10.80) instead. The DIY rice bowl comes with real snow crab meat, shrimp roe and various seasoning for the rice you can mix and create your own rice balls with. The light and delicate taste of the rice balls are a welcome change from the punchy flavours of the stew.
Don’t miss the egg rolls
Other new additions to the menu are the Tuna Seaweed Egg Roll ($10.80) and the Honey Mustard Cheese Egg Roll ($9.80). These seemingly innocuous rolls almost threatened to steal the show from the stews. The Honey Mustard Cheese Egg Roll, in particular, oozed with cheesy goodness while being slathered in sweet and sour honey mustard sauce. Order it.
Since most of the dishes at Masizzim tend to be rich, the Honey Slush Beer ($15.80) and Grapefruit Yoghurt ($14.80) provided a refreshing respite when you need a break from the food. The Grapefruit Yoghurt is perfect for families but for a more “adult” version, it comes with soju on the side which you can mix in.
