Have you ever wondered what your friends Google about? Puppies and recipes? Oh, you don’t know the least!
Google just released the top searched results of Singapore for the month of November and it is a myriad of topics. From protesters to comets, we have them all. In fact, some of the results here surprised me – but it could be the Google doodle. You will see why shortly!
We take a look to see what Singapore is most curious about.
13th Nov: Rosetta Mission (50,000+ searches)
The latest breakthrough in science, the Rosetta mission made history on November 12th when it landed on the surface of a moving comet. From nearly 500 million km away, the Philae lander sent the confirmation of its touchdown back to Earth. This is shattering news and now prompts the question of what we can derive from the data that Rosetta will be feeding to us.
At 50,000, this is one of Singapore’s top searches – get updated with it! I imagine it to be quite a morale booster. I could almost hear this, “Yes John she’s looking this way. Come on man – if mankind can land on a planet, you can get her number.”
24th Nov: Henri de Toulouse Lautrec (50,000+ searches)
Henri Toulouse-Lautrec was a French painter, printmaker, draughtsman and illustrator. He was an alcoholic dwarf, known for his louche lifestyle and for creating vivid art that mimicked his extraordinary life. He belonged in the periods of post-impressionism.
At 50,000 searches, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec ranks surprisingly high on Singapore’s radar. We are suspecting it could be due to the Google doodle commemorating him that caused the spike, which then leads to two conclusions – we are either really knowledgeable, or we like doodles.
9th Nov: Fall of Berlin Wall (50,000+ searches)
The Berlin Wall was a historically iconic barrier that wholly surrounded West Berlin from 1961 to 1989. It was a terrible representation of the height of the Cold War tension at that point. Clinton once famously declared that Berliners have proven that no wall can forever contain the mighty power of freedom.
Don’t be surprised if your dinner date starts glazing fondly at a wall – she is most likely reliving the Berlin victory!
28th Nov: Black Friday (20,000+ searches)
Black Friday started with a single day, the Friday following Thanksgiving in the United States. It is one of the biggest shopping days in the world, with a record number of stores taking part in this year’s Black Friday. To keep up with competition, stores would open past their usual hours and have cutthroat sales prices on everything.
Black Friday hasn’t reached Singapore yet, it maintains relatively mild here. But in terms of crowd, our Hello Kitty days can rise up as worthy challenger!
27th Nov: Phil Hughes (20,000+ searches)
Philip Joel Hughes was an Australian cricketer who played cricket for South Australia and Worcestershire. He was the youngest Test centurion since 1965. On 25th November, he was knocked unconscious by a bouncer, which caused a vertebral artery dissection that led to a haemorrhage. He died on 27th November having never regained consciousness.
25th Nov: Ferguson (10,000+ searches)
The Ferguson unrest is an ongoing series of protests and civil disorder that begun on August 10th, after the deadly shooting of Michael Brown. They grand jury decided against indicting Officer Wilson. This led to heightened disarray, with demonstrations raging on. Further calls for a new grand jury were rejected.
6th Nov: Whatsapp Blue Tick (10,000+ searches)
Check marks will appear next to each message you send. One gray tick indicates the message was successfully sent. Two gray ticks indicate that the message was successfully delivered to the recipient’s phone. Two blue ticks indicate that the recipient has read your message.
This new update was met with mass disapproval and unhappiness. I suppose that is to be expected. Imagine all the poor, hapless employees seeing the blue tick after nervously telling their boss that they want to take leave for Christmas! What a troublesome update.
12th Nov: Kim Kardashian (10,000+ searches)
Kim Kardashian was interviewed by the most besotted journalist in the world and flattery paid off because accompanying that interview was a spread of Kim Kardashian’s ample assets. True to her campaign, she broke the internet. She also broke what’s left of my faith in humanity.
Could this search be a sign of an average Singapore man’s preferences on his lady’s behind? Uh-oh!
