The home-grown singer’s 13th album is her boldest and most confident work yet

Three years since her last full-length album Kepler, mandopop queen Stefanie Sun returns with her brand new album, strikingly titled A Dancing Van Gogh. At a press conference held on Friday (Feb 9) at The Arts House, she shared about the inspiration behind the album, as well as interesting nuggets about her life as a soon-to-be mother of two.
“I felt like it was very cinematic. The lyrics were full of imagery. It colours came through, the yellows, the blues… His intensity,” Sun, 39, explains when asked about what draws her to the titular track A Dancing Van Gogh in the first place.
Sun, who burst into the mandopop scene in 2001 with her hit Cloudy Sky, said: “Music does have a lot of possibilities… it doesn’t just have to be like that. We can, you know, just go off the grid a bit. Just explore a bit of something that’s a bit more different. So yeah, that’s how it became the first plug, and that’s how it inspired the many other tracks.”
When asked about her second child, Sun shared a funny anecdote about how her son’s classmates all found out about the pregnancy even before she announced it on her social media late last month.
“He was in the bathtub when we told him and he was really excited. So we were like, ‘Hey don’t tell anybody, okay?'”
“We said it with a pinch of salt because we know that he’s five… But very quickly, the whole school knew about it!”
Apparently, Little Nadim — as Sun’s first child is known to her fans — gave the secret away while learning about MRT etiquette in school.
Recounting the story to a room full of amused journalists, Sun said: “The teacher actually came up to me and said, oh today we were teaching them about how we have to give up our seat for the disabled and the pregnant.”
Enthusiastically, Little Nadim’s hand shot right up and volunteered: “My mama has a baby in her belly!”
In her 17-year career, the petite songstress has traveled to places like France and Egypt to shoot her music videos. For A Dancing Van Gogh, two music videos were shot in Iceland, namely Immense Beauty, and Windbreaker.
The meet-and-greet session will happen at 5pm Saturday (Feb 10) at Bugis Square, Bugis Junction. Fans with copies of A Dancing Van Gogh will be able to get it stamped with her self-portrait.
