It’s been called the greatest light show on Earth – the dancing lights of the Aurora Borealis is the stuff of legends and I went on the hunt for it
“You cannot rob me of free nature’s grace, you cannot shut the windows of the sky through which Aurora shows her brightening face.”
– James Thomson, Castle of Indolence, 1748
Having seen photos of auroras, it was definitely on my bucket list. That and an opportunity to see the world’s largest (and original) ice hotel, in Sweden.
I researched and prepared as much thermal wear that I could get my hands on but nothing prepared me for when I arrived in Kiruna and was greeted by an ice block on the runway.
What struck me was how dark it was at lunchtime (it looked like it was closer to 6pm)! I made my way to the tourist office in town to book the three experiences I had travelled all this way for – a visit to the Ice Hotel, a dog sled ride and a snowmobile tour (007 style) in the hope of catching a glimpse of the Northern Lights.
