5. Preah Vihear Temple

Built in the early 9th Century, the Preah Vihear Temple was dedicated to the Hindu deity Shiva. It features the highest standards of Khmer architecture and stone carvings. Preah Vihear has been in the news due to the dispute between Cambodia and Thailand over its possession. Look out for the Nagaraj Courtyard with the serpent heads.

4. The Killing Fields

These were the fateful execution grounds of the Khmer Rouge. Choeung Ek is now a memorial to the countless victims of their violent regime. While it can be unnerving, most visitors will tell you it is moving and a “must-see”.

3. Phnom Tamao Wildlife Rescue Centre

The Phnom Tamao Wildlife Rescue Centre is home to about 1,200 animals from over 100 species, most of which have been rescued from the illegal wildlife trade by the Wildlife Rapid Rescue Team, in cooperation with the Cambodian government. Get close to many animals including sun bears, elephants, tigers and more.

2. Kratie: Dolphin Paradise

Kratie is a small town along the bank of the mighty Mekong. It has much idyllic natural scenery. Freshwater dolphins are rare and more so the Irrawaddy dolphins North of Kratie. With only around 15 to 20 remaining, they make a privileged sight.

1. Angkor Wat

Angkor Wat is a stunning, iconic monument of Cambodia, with its renowned scenes of nature growing over historic architecture. Constructed in the early 1100s, it was a Hindu temple complex dedicated to Vishnu.

The surviving stone structures at Angkor Wat are only a part of what used to be. Its chambers and courtyards feature many carved scenes of wars, everyday life then, and Hindu legends.
