Even if you are an Apple or Samsung Galaxy S fan, you got to admit that the latest models have been looking painfully similar to their predecessors. No doubt while there might have been improvements made in the processors, cameras or the smart capabilities, it makes you question: What are you getting in your next mobile upgrade? Having crossed the midway point of 2018, we have seen the release of many impressive smartphones that can pose a serious challenge to the iPhone and Galaxy S flagship models. Even though some of them are not ridiculously budget, its fresh look and design may just catch your eye.

2. Galaxy A8 Star (from $748)
Made for savvy millennials, this ergonomically designed all-rounded Galaxy A8 Star comes with relatively high specs and a sleek, glowy design, and at $748, proves to be much more affordable than its Galaxy S compatriots.
Design and Display
The Samsung A8 Star comes with a glass back and front held together by a full metal body around the sides. Unlike the superior S9, the A8 is less curved and at the front just gently rounded-off at the edge. Unlike most mid-range phones, however, the A8 is built to be water-resistant. We’re talking at least 1.5 metres deep for half an hour. Similar to the nova 3i, the A8 features a Full HD+ Super Amoled Infinity Display and an 18.5:9 aspect ratio, promising users with a sublime viewing experience. at just 7.6mm thick with a reduced bezel makes it a stylish phone to carry in your palm.
Software, Camera and Battery
Like most smartphones in the market now, the A8 also comes with Dual Rear Cameras, both with f1.7 apertures, on top of the already impressive 24MP (f2.0) front camera. With the large apertures on board, it should be easier to capture bright, clear images but unfortunately, the A8 did not perform under low light as well as how we thought it would. Cameras aside, the Qualcomm Snapdragon 660 and Octa Core processors make the A8 a pretty beefy machine. Running on 4GB of RAM and an internal memory of 64GB with microSD support of up to a staggering 400GB, there is no fear in not having enough space for your images. videos or favourite Netflix programmes. The phone which contains a mega 3700mAh battery promises to provide long-lasting usage throughout the day.
Conclusion
Overall the Galaxy A8 Star is a pretty cool, all-rounded phone. For Samsung fans who may not be willing to pay as much for a Galaxy S, you may opt for the A series. At $748 however, this smartphone does not come cheap as well and is considered one of the more high-end mid-range smartphones despite having almost similar specifications. Unless you are an ardent Samsung die-hard, you may be able to find another device with similar performance levels at a lower price, ensuring you get a better bang for your buck.
