1. Witness the unveiling of a record-setting giant mooncake, and take a bite of it!

This one’s for the history books. For their annual Mid-Autumn celebrations, the Sun Yat Sen Nanyang Memorial Hall is partnering with heritage brand Kwong Cheong Thye to set a record – the largest mooncake created in Singapore! Measuring a massive 1.8 metres in diameter, the gigantic mooncake must be seen to be believed. Be a part of history by joining the unveiling ceremony on 22 September, from 6pm to 7pm, and you can get a taste of it! The mooncake is halal-certified too, so all races are welcome to sample a history-making piece. Besides snapping some awesome selfies with the giant mooncake, add a beautiful sparkle to the ‘gram at the Memorial Hall’s lantern installation under the stars! Set to an ASEAN theme, it features gorgeous lanterns from all over the region, infusing the romantic atmosphere with cultural heritage from now until 8 October. The joy at the Memorial Hall doesn’t stop there – join in the rest of the festivities going on at the Memorial Hall on 22 and 23 September! From live traditional performances under the stars, to mooncake and tea tasting, to fun craft workshops, your Mid-Autumn experience at the Memorial Hall is set to be a memorable one for the books too.

1. Yàn (from $62 for a box of four)

If you’re worried about the overkill of mooncakes, Cantonese restaurant Yàn offers the alternative of the steamed milk custard rabbit bun as part of its mooncake quartet. The steamed bun is filled with fragrant sweet and creamy milk custard. But for purists, the restaurant does offer its signatures of the white lotus mooncake variants, including the ones with macadamia nuts and single, double yolks, and our personal favourite – the flaky thousand layer yam mooncakes that come in single or double yolks options.

Likening to precious gems in treasure troves, the presentation of mooncakes is something not to be taken lightly of when the Mid-Autumn festivities come around. 1. Mickey and Friends Musical Carousel Collection ($88 for a box of eight)

It lights up, rotates and plays music! Yes, Mickey and Friends Musical Carousel Collection does all three if you’re looking for a true dramatic mooncake offering. Designed by Disney’s own artists, the fully functioning musical carousel mooncake box is basically a gorgeous rose gold-glided tin that comes with a switch button. After connecting to a power source with the provided USB cable, the mooncake box comes alive, gently spinning around to display the 3D-graphics of beloved characters Mickey, Minnie, Donald, Daisy and Goofy riding on a merry-go-round.  The joyful tune of ‘Mickey Mouse March’ is played at the same time. Inside the tin is a removable two-tier dessert tray to hold the snowskin mooncakes of pink coral-touting Pandan Lotus with Gula Melaka in a beautiful pink coral shade, and Chocolate Manuka honey in a light brown shade.

Available at Crystal Jade Culinary Concepts’ outlets until 24 September

Savour these beautiful mooncakes

This season, Hai Tien Lo at Pan Pacific Singapore features a range of beautiful traditional and snowskin mooncakes

Mid-Autumn is upon us and Hai Tien Lo’s Executive Chef Lai Tong Ping and his capable team present an assortment of petite snowskin mooncakes as well as traditional delights.

Novel Flavours

Hai Tien Lo’s new flavours this year include White Coffee with Red Bean Paste, Golden Corn Seaweed, Guihua (Osmanthus) Seaweed, and Oolong and Chrysanthemum Paste ($58 for eight).

“Red bean paste has been a common filling used in other savoury pastries and I wanted to experiment with incorporating this flavour into a mooncake and pairing it with the rich aroma of white coffee,” says Chef Lai.

He adds, “Combining the earthy taste of oolong and the floral tastes of chrysanthemum was a natural choice, while the umami taste of seaweed complements the subtle sweetness of both the osmanthus and corn.”

Durian lovers will be thrilled by Hai Tien Lo’s signature Durian Flavour Snowskin ($62 for eight).

Traditional Bites

Traditionalists will enjoy their baked White Lotus Seed Paste Mooncakes, Single or Double Yolk ($56-$60) as well as the new White Lotus Seed Paste Mooncake with Macadamia Nuts ($54).

Presented in a multi-layered red box with traditional Chinese motifs in black, elegantly secured with red tassels, the mooncakes are also perfect as gifts for business associates and relatives.

The mooncakes will be available at Hai Tien Lo (Level 3) and Pacific Marketplace (Level 1) from Aug 19 to Sep 19, 11am to 10pm. All prices subject to GST & service charge.
