It’s no wonder they’ve gone viral
By Samantha Francis
We’re not sure why, but adding rainbow colours to (most) foods make them a whole lot more attractive and magical.
We’ve rounded up 10 of our favourite rainbow foods, from grilled cheese to bagel and even corn — they’re guaranteed to make you happy with every bite.
1. Glass Gem Corn
Unlike the rest of this list, the dazzling glass gem corn was born that way. Created by Carl Barnes, a half Cherokee, half Scottish-Irish farmer living in Oklahoma, the corn was bred from various seeds from cobs that exhibited vivid, translucent colours. What you get are rows of skittle-like, rainbow hued corn.
2. Rainbow Bagel
Made in the bagel mecca that is New York, the rainbow bagel by The Bagel Store took the Internet by storm when Business Insider released a video of the mesmerisingly bagel-making process. Each rainbow bagel sandwiches a generous dollop of funfetti cream cheese for the ultimate Instagram-worthy snack.
3. Rainbow Grilled Cheese Sandwich
The latest to hop on the bandwagon is this rainbow grilled cheese sandwich from KALA Toast in Hong Kong. While it looks like somebody added food dye liberally to our favourite, oozy, mid-day snack, the sandwich itself is made with cheese of all flavours — blue is lavender, green is basil, red is tomato, and yellow is plain old cheese (a combination of mozzarella, cheddar, emmental, and gruyere).
4. Rainbow Cake
The rainbow cake craze may have died down a little, but you’ll still find them in many cafes. From bright rainbow shades to pastel rainbow hues, these moist and delightful cakes will make anyone’s day. Our favourite rainbow cakes can be found in places like Maison Ikkoku and NOM – Bistro and Bakery.
5. Rainbow Waffles
If you’ve got a waffle maker at home, it’s time to try making these rainbow waffles now!
6. Rainbow Latte Art
Even your daily cup of joe isn’t spared from the rainbow invasion. Mason Salisbury, who works at Sambalatte coffee shop in Las Vegas has become an Internet sensation for his rainbow-tinted latte art. The use of food dye is meant to add fun into learning latte art and these rainbow lattes aren’t actually on the menu … yet.
7. Rainbow Ice Cream
If you’re visiting Tokyo, don’t miss out on ice cream stand Daily Chico. Apart from old favourites like chocolate and vanilla, you could also get an extra large cone with eight different flavours piled atop each other — Tochi Otome strawberry, chocolate, mocha, vanilla, melon, grape, matcha green tea, and finally ramune (a popular type of Japanese fizzy cider). Creating your own rainbow cone has never been so fun!
8. Rainbow Pancakes
For a breakfast that’s bound to put a smile on your face, head to Nook DIY House Of Pancakes where you can design your own pancakes on a griddle. If you’re too lazy to work for your meal, there’s always the option to order a stack of photogenic Rainbow Pancakes.
9. Rainbow Kueh Lapis
The joy of peeling off each layer of the rainbow kueh lapis cake is something many Singaporeans are familiar with. The colourful, steamed, 9-layer Nonya Kueh can be bought at places like Bengawan Solo and Harriann.
10. Rainbow Smoothie
After digging into all these colourful foods, you might want to drink up a healthy rainbow smoothie. This recipe by food blogger Sweet & Savoury, features blended fruits like kiwi, pineapple, banana, blueberries and more.
