These corners of the world look too magnificent to be true – but they are, and they’re absolutely perfect in pictures

Pamukkale, meaning “cotton castle” in Turkish, is a natural hot spring in the River Menderes Valley of Denizli Province in Turkey. These surreal steps are travertine terrace formations of carbonate minerals left by the flowing water.

In late-2nd Century B.C, the ancient city of Hierapolis – dynasty of the Attalids, the kings of Pergamon – was built on top of Pamukkale. The site reaches about 2,700m long and 160m high. The ruins of the baths, temples and other Greek monuments can also be seen here.

The nearest major city to Pamukkale is Denizli, where you can take a train, bus or car to this magical hot spring.
