2. Northland – Adventure Puketi
With over 360 indigenous species of plants, this subtropical rainforest is one of the most diverse in New Zealand.
Run by locals of the Puketi Forest area, these DOC-approved tours focus on the environment and history of the area. Visitors will hear the native Kauri forest come alive in the transition from day to night, becoming familiar with the native flora and fauna that flourish in the bush. Listen to the bird song as the tuis, the fantails and the Kukupa settle for the night, while the nocturnal moreporks and kiwi awaken. Feel the draft of the bats flying overhead and discover the creepy and crawly insects that are active at night. A lucky few may even spot kiwis.
