Specialities: Bruschetta, pizza, lasagne, almost all kinds of pasta

Not specialities: Spaghetti Bolognese, Fettucine Alfredo, pepperoni pizza

It might seem that all foods ending with a vowel originate from Italy.

For the most part, it’s a good indicator. Pasta or bread slapped with dollops of meat or vegetable toppings such as bruschetta, pizza, and lasagne are indeed legitimate children of this fair country.

But not all types of pasta and sauces are truly Italian. In fact, many of them can’t be found in Italy! For example, there’s no such thing as Spaghetti Bolognese in Bologna, or any other part of Italy. There is a similar dish, pasta con ragu (pasta with meat sauce), but not with this type of pasta that doesn’t hold the meat. Fettucine Alfredo is also more of a US invention than the traditional pasta with butter and Parmesan cheese.

Still, there are many culinary gems in Italy and it’s no wonder what many people love most about Italy is the food!
