Unexpected adventures
Several years ago, riding pillion on a jet ski in Cebu left me terrified senseless – I was convinced that I would be flung off into the Philippine Sea.
This time, in this tranquil resort on the edge of Bintan, I decided to grab life by the handles. Like a daredevil tempting fate, I tore through the waters on a jet ski.
The exhilarating ride quite literally took my breath away. Haunted by the instructor’s parting words to me — “Remember: No brakes!” — I felt the fierce engine slice through the waves and swing corners, sending my fragile heart reeling with fear.
When I glanced around, I realised my companions were throttling at twice my speed.
I felt silly, but only for a moment – because as I looked ahead, it seemed as though I was alone in the vast sea, and my anxiety was swept away with the spray.
It may have taken some time, but I eventually learned to love the rush of the open ocean.
Thankfully, in an idyllic resort like this, it felt like I had all the time in the world.
