5 Attractions In Xi’An Besides The Terracotta Warriors You Should Visit

This ancient capital of China has more than a few lesser-known gems

Any history buff worth their salt would know that Xi’an more than rivals Beijing and Shanghai as the core of ancient Chinese civilisation. The imperial capital of thirteen dynasties, Xi’an is most famous for being home to the iconic Terracotta Warriors that guard the tomb of Qin Shi Huang. Add a walk along the City Walls and a visit to the Dayan Pagoda, and you’ll see why this city wowed Mark Zuckerberg in 2015.

But the basic one-day itinerary does not do justice to the treasures of China’s rich cultural heritage that Xi’an holds. And if you get restless looking at towering, centuries-old structures after another, get ready to be surprised by the colourful diversity of natural and urban life not too far away. From modern politics to scenic views to a foodie’s paradise, these five awe-inspiring places will get you delving deeper into this fascinating city.

4. Nanshan (南山)

Xi’an abounds with mountains, but few travellers know of others besides Huashan (华山), famous for the challenge of crossing the plank walk on high ascension peaks. But if that sounds too adventurous for you, or if you’re looking to beat the crowds, you won’t lose out on scenic views by hiking Nanshan.

Located between Wei River and Han River, and a two-hour drive from the city of Xi’an, Nanshan spans more than 1600km! The highest peak (a whopping 2.6km) overlooks an expanse of natural beauty that will be sure to take your breath away. To make Nanshan more accessible to the public, the Chinese government has recently built sturdy steps and cable car rails to various points of the mountain, so your journey up can be as challenging as you want it to be!

If the climb makes you feel peckish, grab a fried pancake handmade and sold along the trail before the peak. We highly recommend having a warm meal of organic and traditional Chinese food at one of the farmhouse restaurants (农家乐) near the carpark entrance. It’s the perfect treat after a good hike.
