Restraint was the name of the game as Weiken.com designed the interior of this four-storey house. Led by Emily Tan, the design team was tasked to create a contemporary setting for this family home while keeping things understated and elegant.
“The homeowners are quite reserved, so they were looking forward to a home that reflects their personality – something simple and restrained,” said Emily.
Out in the open
After a bout of spatial reconfiguration, the first floor of this four-storey house is now a large and open space. The designers gave the rooms a refreshed open concept that also benefits from a deluge of natural daylight entering through full-height glass sliding doors by the side.
Coupled with the white neutral colour scheme, the living and dining areas are now spacious and airy – just the way the owners like it.
Texture feature
Despite having a considerably large floor space, the design team didn’t want to clutter the living room by filling it up with too many pieces of loose furniture. But leaving the room bare wasn’t an option either.
“The homeowners prefer to live in a home that is slightly minimalist, but still warm and inviting,” Emily explained.
She achieved this balance by playing up the textures in the living room. In particular, the living room feature wall has been crafted using black glass and a marble-like laminate, which lends the space a contemporary elegance.
Kidding around
Some homeowners have a tendency to go overboard when designing a bedroom for their children. The kids’ rooms in this home, however, have a more understated look.
The design team reined in the design to make sure that the rooms will continue to appeal to the children even as they grow older. Each room has also been outfitted with a built-in study table and extra cabinet space to make them as functional as possible.
Be Our Guest
An easy elegance can be found in the guest bedroom, where the designers focused on creating a cosy ambience. Like in the master bedroom, Emily customised a headboard using synthetic leather to give this room a dramatic flair.
Bold decisions were taken to mix light neutral colours with a deep charcoal colour for a room that is neither overly masculine nor bland. Instead, the colour palette gives the room a timeless modernity.
Crossing the line
A similar “no frills” attitude follows through into the master bedroom. Since the ceiling-high, wall-to-wall window is the star of this space, Emily and her team didn’t want to take anything away from the view.
This is not to say that things were left bare and uninteresting. They provided subtle design elements that include a unique zigzagging ceiling light, patterned wallpaper and a synthetic leather headboard that adds instant luxe to the space.
