Seven days on beautiful white sand beaches and turquoise waters, and no photos to show for it! Guinevere Sofer explains how to avoid such a tragedy
A few years back, I had the opportunity to travel to the Maldives. Its breath-taking beaches and clear blue waters present terrific photo-opportunities.
I imagined how I would be the envy of my friends when I share these photos upon my return. To ensure that I made the best of this opportunity, I furiously snapped photos with my phone cam – until one fateful morning.
Water & Phone Don’t Mix
As the morning sun rose, the tide was calm and shallow. I decided to wade into the knee-high water and to take a photo of the resort as the surf lapped the beach in the foreground.
As I was pressing away at the touch screen, the phone accidentally slid through my fingers. With my ‘lightning-speed’ reflexes, I was able to catch it – but only the top half! The bottom half went into the drink.
My phone died a watery death, along with all the photos.
Such a tragedy would never have happened if I had simply used a waterproof camera. Not only would I have pictures, but my phone would still be functioning.
Right Gear for the Right Occasion
Singaporeans are an adventurous lot. We travel often. We love swimming, beach activities, scuba diving, snorkelling, and surfing.
With the right waterproof Compact Digital Camera, you wouldn’t have to worry about getting it wet, dirty, or bruised. Not sure about this?
Take for instance the Canon Powershot D20 ($599). It is shockproof up to 1.5 metres and waterproof up to 10 metres.
Come Out On Top
This means you can take pictures underwater, above water and around water. It has a tough, beefy design and it functions splendidly as a regular camera as well.
The Canon Powershot D20 has an underwater flash – essential for illuminating underwater objects more than a metre away.
Moreover, it can take movies of your adventures – above or below water. And, in case you drop it in the water, it floats back up!
If I had a camera like this in the Maldives, I wouldn’t have come back empty-handed.
Things that you can do with a waterproof camera that you cannot with a phone cam
