Bring on the Cheer

A sunshine-yellow coloured wall brings a touch of happiness

Our popular section continues with more inspiring ideas and home makeovers

Charm and cheer are the hallmarks of this apartment for a young couple — and aptly so. Designed by D’Initial Concept, the home exudes a laid-back café-like vibe that is boosted by vibrant colours and a well-curated mix of materials and furniture.

Cosy Up

The dining area takes up a cosy corner in the home, and is defined by red brick walls.

On one side, a chalkboard panel lets the owners personalise the space on a day-to-day basis while an internal window provides sneak peeks into the kitchen for some cooking entertainment.

Sunshine State

Much effort went into keeping the living area bright and lively. But instead of design gymnastics, the designers opted to keep things simple.

The TV console is a playful configuration of wooden boxes, each providing a niche for displaying personal mementos. Behind, a sunshine-yellow coloured wall brings a brilliant burst of cheer to the space.

Cooking Options

Function reigns supreme in the galley-configuration kitchen. Here, laminates have been used on both the cabinet fronts (a subdued cement-like finish) and counter top and backsplash (a warm timber finish).

The laminate counter top, especially, is an economical but hardy alternative to other materials like stone or quartz.

Light Work

The easy, light attitude of the home continues into the study where a carefully-composed palette of bright yellow, baby blue and grey timber creates a pleasant space to be in.

The designers built in a full cabinet on one side of the room — a neat study is, after all, a conducive one.

A mellow mood takes over in the master bedroom where a deeper palette of walnut timber laminates was used for the cabinets that framed the bed. The bed is backed by a dark niche that has been dramatically lit, creating a cosy cove of sorts.

A bright spot of cyan colours the wall beside the entrance to keep things feeling young.
