And no, it's not from maintaining that majestic mullet

Warning: Season 7 spoilers ahead

Fighting through the apocalypse can work up an appetite, and for American actor Josh McDermitt, that hunger is easily sated by siew mai.

"What are these?" Remarked the "Walking Dead" star as he chowed down the yellow meat dumplings. "Popping these like delicious chicken-filled candy."

He's warm, chatty and cavalier - especially considering the heavy mid-season cliffhanger that Season 7 left us with. After surrendering himself, McDermitt's Eugene Porter has been whisked off by the tyrannical villain Negan to someplace we're guessing isn't Wonderland.

We grill the man with the mullet on his life on set - and why it gave the big softie nightmares.

Do you have any favourite zombie movies?

I love 28 Days Later and Dawn of the Dead – I just watched that and that was great. But I’ll be honest: I haven’t seen many horror movies because I get scared. Working on this show was hard for me at first because I’m kind of a sensitive soul and I had nightmares for the first few months I was working on the show.

Even though it was my favourite show, actually being on it was very upsetting to my soul. So I’m just now getting into horror movies.

What did you have nightmares about?

The violence. It’s justified within this world and I’ve become numb to it, but in one of the episodes, I was shooting a “zombie” with a machine gun.

It was fake bullets and nothing was coming out, but the “zombie” moved to look like he was being shot, and when you’re just shooting someone like that 15 times and it’s so realistic, it just hurt my head, you know?

Although I seem like an aggressive guy at times, I’m a big softie and a kind soul, so that did a number on me. But I’ve gotten over it – now I can “shoot” people all day without a care! [Laughs]

Besides “The Walking Dead”, where else can fans catch you?

You can see me on “Twin Peaks”. That’s coming out in May and I’m very excited about that – I was a fan of “Twin Peaks” when I was younger. I can’t really say much, but you may not recognise me in it.

Is that because you won’t be sporting that mullet any more?

I see what you’re trying to do! I can’t say, but basically I like playing characters who are completely different from me. You’ll see!
