Keep your cat happy at home and litter-train your cat, and you’ll be happier too!
Cats can be homely creatures and may not wander outside unless they are bored.
Spend time to play with your cat and ensure that it has a clean and comfortable environment at home, so that the tendency for it to wander will be less. This will encourage your cat to be a homebody.
If your cat wanders outside, it could become a nuisance by scratching things, making a din or fighting with other cats. Worst of all, it could end up defecating outside, including soiling public areas.
You don’t want your neighbours to be unhappy and lodge complaints if the faeces isn’t cleared!
Keep your cat happy at home, and litter-train your cat. This isn’t a monumental task – it starts with keeping the litter box clean so that the cat will use the litter box. Once you do these two things, you won’t hear from unhappy neighbours again.
Here are tips on litter-training.
Tip 1: Sanitise the Litter Tray
Clean your cat’s litter tray daily by discarding dirty litter and poop. It is advisable to clean the litter tray once every two days.
Wash it thoroughly with water and a teaspoon of vinegar or lemon juice to neutralise the urine odour. Remember to refill the tray with 3-4cm of fresh new litter after.
Tip 2: Placement of the Litter Tray
The location of the litter tray is important! Place the tray a distance away from your cat’s sleeping and eating areas, yet ensure it’s accessible.
If you have multiple cats, use more litter trays.
Please note, cats tend to defecate shortly either after waking up, after meals or after exercise. Try scratching the litter in the tray to get it interested. This assures it that the litter tray is clean.
