15. Trace the evolution of photography in Southeast Asia through the lens of the Peranakans

The Peranakan Museum’s first photography exhibition opens May 5, and showcases some of the rarest and earliest images of the Peranakan community in Singapore and the region. The exhibition, Amek Gambar (Taking Pictures): Peranakans and Photography, covers more than a century and a half of the photoraphy, and traces the emergence, adoption, and evolution of the photography in Southeast Asia from as far back as the 1800s.

Photography enthusiasts will be thrilled to see a showcase of early photography techniques, including the earliest surviving image of Singapore taken in 1844 on a daguerreotype — one of the first photographic processes where images are captured on a small metal plate. Issues of identity, authority, and connectedness are also brought forth, providing insights not only into the Peranakan world, but life in Southeast Asia and Singapore.
