With tons of indie shops and its unique architecture, it’s no wonder Tiong Bahru is always on the top of Singapore’s travel guides.
Recently, this old neighbourhood has turned into a hipster hotspot that locals and expatriates both love. But sites of our local heritage have survived the gentrification and continue to bring joy to the nostalgic. 10. Qi Tian Gong Temple
If you want to immerse yourself in Singapore’s ethnic Chinese heritage, pay a visit to Qi Tian Gong Temple, the first and oldest temple dedicated to the Monkey God of Journey to the West fame. With more than 10 Monkey God statues dating back decades, the temple will take you back to the communal traditions of Tiong Bahru. It’s a spectacular public affair every eighth lunar month at the temple, where elaborate performances take place to celebrate the Monkey God’s birthday.
