A portion of the Rail Corridor will glow in the dark as part of a test trial next year

You may have heard that the Tanjong Pagar railway station will be largely demolished to make way for a new MRT station, but do you know what’s going to happen to the rest of the 24km-long railway?
This path, called the Rail Corridor, is a “green corridor” that has been designated as a public space for the different heartland communities in Singapore. According to the latest developments by the Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA), a 400m-long track along the corridor will be used to test four different trail materials next year.

One of them is a glow-in-the-dark path, which will stretch between Choa Chu Kang Road and Upper Bukit Timah Road. The substance used is a mixture of natural non-toxic light green strontium aluminate minerals, which absorbs ultraviolet light during the day and can glow in the night for at least eight hours.
According to URA, the path will be completed by the third quarter of 2017, after which the public is invited to use the track and share their feedback on the material. The other three test tracks are made of grass and gravel, fine gravel and earth-coloured porous concrete.
