The Pokémon World Championships 2027 will take place in Singapore from 13 to 15 August 2027, marking the first time the prestigious tournament has been held here.
The main competition will be staged at Singapore EXPO, with the final day moving to the Singapore Indoor Stadium.
The World Championships are the pinnacle of competitive Pokémon, bringing together the world’s top players after a season of qualifying events. Competitors will battle for world titles across the Pokémon Trading Card Game, Pokémon video games and Pokémon GO.
Behind the cheerful mascots and brightly coloured cards lies an unexpectedly serious competitive scene. Players study strategies, team combinations and probabilities with the intensity of chess players, while Pokémon TCG competitors arrive with carefully constructed decks that may have taken months to perfect.
For international visitors, Singapore is an especially convenient host city. Singapore EXPO is just minutes from Changi Airport, making it remarkably easy to get from the plane to the action. The city’s compact size also means fans can catch a few matches before heading out to explore.
A morning spent watching Pokémon battles could easily be followed by lunch in Katong, an afternoon around Marina Bay and supper at a hawker centre.
Previous Pokémon World Championships have grown into much more than competitive tournaments, attracting collectors, families, cosplayers and generations of fans. Pokémon now spans several generations: adults who first played Pokémon Red or Blue on a Game Boy in the 1990s may find themselves attending Worlds alongside children who discovered the franchise through Pokémon GO or the Nintendo Switch.
Pokémon cards, meanwhile, have evolved from playground trading material into a major global collectibles market. Singapore already has a particularly strong connection to the franchise. Pokémon Center Singapore at Jewel Changi Airport was the first permanent Pokémon Center to open outside Japan, making it an obvious first stop for visiting fans — and giving Changi Airport the potential to become particularly Pokémon-heavy that weekend.
There is a local competitive angle, too. Singaporean players have already competed on the international stage, including at previous World Championships. Bringing the tournament here gives local players and fans something they have never had before: the biggest event in competitive Pokémon taking place right at home.
Even those with little interest in competitive gaming may find the atmosphere worth experiencing. Expect serious players, elaborate costumes, excited children, nostalgic adults and plenty of intense discussions about whether someone should have switched Pokémon two turns earlier.
For three days in August 2027, Singapore will effectively become one of the centres of the Pokémon universe. There will be battles. There will be cards. And there will almost certainly be an extraordinary number of Pikachus.
