Podiatry 101: Conditions And Disorders That Podiatrists Can Treat

There are many different conditions that can affect our feet, and a podiatrist is the best person to consult for proper treatment.

When you get sick and need a medical consultation, you normally visit a doctor who specializes in your concern. You see a cardiologist if you have high blood pressure and a dermatologist if you have concerns about rashes, pimples, or warts. But did you know that there are doctors who specialize in treating feet?

These medical professionals are called podiatrists. Like other doctors, they attend medical school and receive several years of formal training before doing their residency in a hospital or clinic. Some podiatrists go on to get advanced certifications for surgery or sports medicine. Instead of using MD or medical doctor, podiatrists append DPM or doctor of podiatric medicine to their name.

If you’ve ever wondered about what to expect from seeing a foot specialist Singapore residents trust, here are some of the most common foot disorders that you should talk to a podiatrist about.

Hammer Toes

Like bunions, hammer toes are a type of bone deformity that only affects the three middle toes. The condition causes an unnatural bend at the joint, which causes the toe to have a hammer-like shape. You can get hammer toes from foot injuries, arthritis, or even from wearing shoes that are too tight. If treated early, the condition can be corrected by your podiatrist with orthopedic footwear and inserts. Severe cases, however, may require surgery in order for the patient to walk normally and without pain.
