In this National Day special, nostalgia lovin’ Irene Ang walks us through her favourite spots in Singapore
Childhood haunts
Growing up, the Kellock Convent schoolgirl used to hang out at the library and swimming pool in Queenstown, as well as “the corner coffee shop in River Valley”, she recalls. “I used to buy all my stuff at Queensway Shopping Centre.”
My Love, Sinema was shot entirely in Ipoh, Malaysia, and harkens back to the old days of Singapore.
Old-world glamour
It was tough finding old buildings for My Love, Sinema, so her team filmed in Ipoh, Malaysia, instead. Ang says the old cinema on set reminded her of her primary school days, where people “would wear nice nice to go see movies [sic]. Tickets could only be bought at the cinema, so we would dress up, arrive in style… only to realise that tickets had sold out!”
Irene Ang is the executive producer of My Love, Sinema. It is scheduled for release on 8 Sept.
A version of this article appeared in the print edition of Weekender, Issue 158, August 5 - August 18, 2016, with the headline 'Down memory lane with Irene Ang'.
