Joyden Treasure’s home-cooked flavours will warm your heart and belly
The flavourful Jumbo Prawns in Dark Sauce is great with a serving of rice
Joyden Treasures, run by F&B Group Joyden Concepts, is the type of restaurant that you head to when you’re craving no-frills dishes that remind you of home-cooked food.
Located at Leisure Park Kallang, the 7000 sq ft restaurant is the newest addition to F&B Group Joyden Concepts’ stable of eateries featuring classic Chinese dishes.
Comfort food made exquisite
Calm your frazzled nerves with this comforting double boiled soup
Soup makes for a comforting start to any meal, and Joyden’s Double Boiled Seafood Soup in Old Cucumber ($14) impressed with its wholesome flavours and the surprise wonton parcel at the bottom.
The broth, made up of mushrooms, dried scallops and fish maw, is presented in the deep hollow of an old cucumber and each sip brought back childhood memories I had of family dinners at Chinese restaurants.
The broth is milky yet light, allowing you to taste the freshness of the steamed grouper
The Original Steamed Red Grouper in Homemade Soy Bean Broth (market price) was also a stellar creation.
The meaty grouper, steamed in a made-from-scratch soya milk broth, resulted in light and mellow flavours that elevated the original taste of the fish.
Topped with golden fried enoki mushrooms, the dish sealed the deal for me.
Flavours of the land and sea
Prawn lovers may want to try the Phoenix Beancurd Skin Prawn Roll ($16) and Jumbo Prawns in Traditional Dark Sauce ($26).
The prawn roll, deep-fried to a crisp, had none of the oiliness often associated with such frittered items.
However, I felt that the century and salted eggs stuffing within didn’t quite complement the natural sweetness of the prawns.
You don’t need a special occasion to indulge in lobster noodles
When the Braised Lobster Noodles with Ginger and Spring Onion (market price) was served, cameras started clicking away and not a word could be heard from any of my dining companions.
Clearly, the striking dish, once a must-have at key celebrations and weddings, still holds an appeal today.
Thankfully the fragrant ee-fu noodles tossed in seafood broth and chunks of fresh local lobster did not disappoint.
Like Peking duck crepe, but possibly better
Fans of Peking duck will appreciate the Crispy Fragrant Duck with Petite Lotus Buns ($58), which at first glance looks like a duck confit.
Simmered with herbs and spices before being deep-fried to a crisp, the duck had fall-off-the-bone flesh and is best enjoyed with the homemade steamed lotus-shaped buns, slivers of pickled papaya and sambal orange sauce.
If you only have space for one dessert, I recommend the Traditional Yam Puree ($16).
Spared from the cloyingly rich coconut milk, the homemade yam puree was light and had just the right amount of sweetness — and is the perfect round-off to your meal.
