You’d be surprised how hard it is to find a vegetarian or vegan restaurant that’s actually healthy. Many people have chosen to go meat-free for health reasons, but find that a lot of the vegetarian options in Singapore are not necessarily very healthy.

To appeal to the meat-lovers, most vegan and vegetarian restaurants have included mock meat in their menu, and these meat alternatives tend to be highly processed and made of gluten and soy protein. Add the refined grains, the excess oil to enhance the flavors, sauces and desserts laden with sugar, and your meal is not very far from junk food.

We don’t think you should give up on vegetarian and vegan restaurants, though. A clean food revolution is taking over existing and new restaurants in Singapore. Whether you’re a vegetarian/vegan or you’re looking to eat healthier, here are seven restaurants to try that don’t skimp out on taste for wholesome nutrition:

5. Peace Cafe

Simple and good food is key to Peace Café, a quaint café in Little India that offers vegetarian meals with many vegan options. To promote a balanced state of mind, all the dishes are made free from garlic and onion, MSG, artificial flavourings and preservatives, while their wide selection of pizzas, pastas and wraps can also be made without gluten. Pizzas are the star here, and choices range from classic Western (Magherita Pizza and Spinach Philly Pizza) to exciting fusion (Tom Yum Pizza). Also known for their desserts, Peace Café offers a variety of light and creamy cakes that cater to many different dietary needs.
