Rainy days are upon us and the best remedy for the cold is a piping hot bowl of herbal soup.
Foodies familiar with good eats from across the causeway have probably already heard of Souper Tang. The brand, also known as Tang Shifu, currently has 18 outlets across Malaysia and specialises in nourishing Chinese soup.
Drawing from her experience in traditional Chinese medicine, the founder of Souper Tang, Cynthia Teh, blends ingredients that not only taste good but also have beneficial properties for the body.
Souper Tang’s Signature Soup has a strong, bold taste that will instantly perk you up.
Super duper soups
Their best selling soup is the Souper Tang Signature Soup ($26.90 for two, $39.90 for four). The soup helps to improve vitality and concentration and also has anti-ageing benefits thanks to ingredients like dried scallops, ginseng, cordyceps and fish maw. The dried seafood and whole chicken pieces create a soup with an incredible depth of flavour that will leave you with a sense of wellness.
The Panax Ginseng Soup uses ginseng and angelica root to improve mental and physical stamina.
At Souper Tang, they believe that soups should come in individual portions as your needs might differ from the other people at the table. Guests looking to boost their mental efficiency before an examination can have the Panax Ginseng Chicken Soup ($15.90) while people looking to calm and mind and get a good night’s sleep can have the Tian Qi Nourishing Soup ($13.90).
Tender pork belly braised in a sweet and savoury dark sauce.
Tempting you with more
While a bowl of soup and a plain bowl of rice makes for a satisfying meal on its own, there are other hearty mains worth trying too.
The Home Braised Pork Belly in Rich Dark Sauce ($18.90) is not your typical kong bak pau. The sauce is stickier and more fragrant as it’s made with oolong tea, angelica root, star anise and orange peel. After braising pork belly in this gooey sauce for 45 minutes, each slice was perfectly tender and I was happy eating it on its own without the steamed spinach bun.
Without exaggeration, Souper Tang’s Beancurd desserts are the best our writer has ever had.
A meal at Souper Tang would also not be complete without having their Caramel Ginger Beancurd ($3.90). This is possibly the best beancurd dessert I’ve had in my life. The texture is slightly denser than Lao Ban’s version but its just as smooth and does not taste of artificial sweetener.
