So you’ve had your fill of Christmas movies. From modern classics like “Malcolm in the Middle” to gold oldies like Meet Me in St Louis, you’ve been there, done that.
Let’s mix it up a little! What if, this Christmas, you don’t feel like being totally jolly with feel-good movies? We’ve put together a movie roulette for every mood you may be going through during this season.
Happy?
You should watch: Legally Blonde (2001)
Once in a while, we need a little reassurance that appearance isn’t everything, and Legally Blonde is a great pick-me-up for that. The talented Reese Witherspoon plays a spritely sorority girl who overcomes prejudice and graduates with high honours from Harvard Law School.
There’s also something satisfying about watching savoury karma being reaped on those who have wronged the protagonist. Revenge is best served in pink outfits!
Hungry?
You should watch: Jiro Dreams of Sushi (2011)
Sukiyabashi Jiro may be a small ten-seater restaurant wedged in a basement beside a Tokyo subway station, but it has three Michelin-stars to its name, and recently hosted President Obama.
This movie launched the restaurant into fame, and it is now the world’s most coveted sushi place. Watch and drool as you see owner Jiro Ono prepare his delectable dishes for the luckiest customers in Japan.
Cuddly?
You should watch: Despicable Me (2010)
Whether you love the precocious yellow minions or little Agnes’ catchphrases (“It’s so fluffy I could die!”), Despicable Me has wormed its way into many hearts. It has won our vote hands-down for the movie we want to cuddle up to.
Oh, and please pass the cookies – the villain Vector has a way of making us crave “coconutties”. Whatever those are, we want them!
Adventurous?
You should watch: Jaws (1975)
Often rated as one of the most thrilling movies in cinematic history, Jaws plays on our fear and curiosity of the deep unknown. Its prime premise – that a tourist attraction is still open for business despite life-threatening incidents – echoes many fearful real-world scenarios.
If you’re still feeling adventurous after watching this nail-biting horror-fest, maybe you should start asking Santa for interstellar migration to be actualised.
Scrooge?
You should watch: Yes Man (2008)
Skip past the clichéd classics of Scrooge and How the Grinch Stole Christmas, and the endless remakes of A Christmas Carol. Yes Man is a modern-day take on negativity that many more people can relate to.
No one’s calling you a wrinkly disillusioned citizen or a green-eyed, green-skinned creature. Instead, you’re the goofy Jim Carrey who makes a paradigm shift in life. Now, we wouldn’t mind being a part of that Christmas miracle!
