Fine Dining Heritage at Corner House

Oignon doux des Cevennes

Corner House has replaced Au Jardin in the historical building at the Botanic Gardens

When Au Jardin closed after more than a decade, it left most foodies wondering what would fill the space it left behind. And now, Corner House has stepped up and taken over the historical black and white bungalow.

This majestic colonial house used to be home to E J H Corner, the Assistant Director of the Botanic Gardens from 1929 to 1945. Some of his botanic sketches and replicas can be seen adorning the walls in the restaurant.

Fine Meals in a Majestic Setting

Helming the kitchen at Corner House is Chef Jason Tan, who brings delicate fine dining sensibilities to the floor. The restaurant solely sets menus with options ranging from $38 for a three-course lunch to $248 for a degustation menu.

The degustation (or as they call it, the Discovery Menu Experience) features an eight-course meal, excluding the amuse-bouche and petit fours. My favourite course was the Interpretation of My Favourite Vegetables, oignon doux des Cevennes. It was the sweet onion from France cooked in four ways. An onion and parmesan topped biscuit, dehydrated onion chip, onion egg with truffles, and an onion broth “latte”.

The egg is cooked within the whole sweet onion, topped with truffles and a touch of pepper. It was a very comforting dish that shows how a simple dish of “onion egg” can be elevated to fine dining.

Small Food, Big Plates, but Filling

Other dishes from the dinner menu include the Free Range Chicken with mushrooms, romaine lettuce, and the chef’s own Surf and Turf sauce. The dish comes with a compressed chicken thigh and a tender chicken breast.

Dessert is a feast for the eyes. The Cocoa “Pebbles” featured chocolate mousse ‘pebbles’ with sugar ‘mushrooms’ and chocolate soil. But don’t get too stuffed! The petit fours next, and you cannot miss the signature “liu sha bao” macarons.
