BAR KAP Opens at The House Of Tan Yeok Nee, A New Cocktail Spot

There are bars that rely on spectacle, and then there are bars that understand atmosphere. BAR KAP, the newly opened cocktail bar in Singapore, firmly belongs to the latter.

Set within The House of Tan Yeok Nee, one of Singapore’s most iconic heritage mansions, BAR KAP offers an intimate drinking experience that feels thoughtful, grounded, and deeply connected to place.

The setting is the first thing that captures attention. This is not a generic hotel lounge or another moody bar dressed in velvet and brass. Instead, BAR KAP works with the building’s existing architecture — timber beams, carved detailing, reflective surfaces, and understated furnishings — allowing the heritage space to remain the star. The result is a bar that feels both preserved and alive.

At the heart of the experience is a cocktail programme inspired by the house’s different eras. While the concept could easily feel thematic, BAR KAP keeps the focus firmly on the drinks.

The Kapitan Era draws inspiration from Tan Yeok Nee’s life as a Teochew merchant, with cocktails shaped by trade routes, spice, and regional flavours. Standouts like Pepper Peddler (S$28++) balance spice, brightness, and subtle savoury notes in a refreshing highball format.

The Station Master Era introduces a deeper, more structured mood. Drinks like Tank Road (S$28++) lean toward approachability with whisky and citrus, while Dynamo (S$28++) offers a more complex profile with whisky, amaro, sherry, and spice. Clay ageing is used here not as a gimmick, but as a technique that softens and enriches the cocktails, giving the programme a distinct identity in Singapore’s competitive bar scene.

The Order Era reflects the building’s time as St Mary’s Home and School for Eurasian Girls. Cocktails such as Lights Out (S$25++), a pandan oil martini variation) show restraint and elegance, while Censer (S$26++) combines mezcal, Campari, pineapple, and lime for a brighter, smoky contrast.

Importantly, BAR KAP also gives serious attention to zero-proof drinks. TCM No. 3 (S$18++), made with soy milk, ginger, honeydew, and gula melaka, is carefully composed rather than treated as an afterthought — creamy, nostalgic, and layered with local character.

The food menu is intentionally concise and designed for sharing, featuring dishes like Mee Kapitan (S$20++) and BAR KAP Bao, as well as playful finishes like an Ice Cream Sandwich (S$9++). It complements rather than competes with the cocktails.

More than anything, BAR KAP is strongest when it allows the heritage of The House of Tan Yeok Nee to guide the experience. It feels like stepping into a quieter, more reflective version of Singapore — one that prioritises architecture, storytelling, and conversation.

Reservations are now open, with BAR KAP officially opening on 15 May 2026.

BAR KAP is located at The House of Tan Yeok Nee, 101 Penang Road, Singapore 238466.
