Doctor’s orders: Drink up

Do you know what’s great for those inflicted with sniffle issues? A classic hot toddy of whiskey, honey, lemon juice and hot water. Which goes to show that spirits, like laughter, may just make for the best medicine at times.

So when multi-storey British gastropub Oxwell & Co quietly opened a new medicinal-themed bar that offers a range of laced liquid remedies, elixirs and potions, colour us very intrigued.

Located at the third floor of the heritage shophouse, The Apothecary welcomes the thirsty, and perhaps the ailing, to its medieval pharmacy enclave. Upon entering through a nondescript glass panel door, we are greeted by a collection of vintage knick-knacks that sit against the emerald walls. A smallish wooden bar is tucked in a corner and behind it stands a rustic shelf that replicates the ones you see at traditional chinese medicinal clinics. While complete with drawers that commonly house all sorts of remedial herbs, the shelf is stocked with eccentric bottles and antique jars containing house-made concoctions. What’s in the compartments? No one knows.

For a quick fix, we are presented with the Croak and Wheeze Relief ($24) – a remedy of Glenfiddich 12-year-old whisky mixed with honey sage syrup, citrus, orange bitters and crinkled sage leaves infused with cigar smoke. While it makes for a yummy concoction, the cocktail’s deconstructed presentation is what got the excitement going, allowing us to assemble the drink (with a tongs to pick up the sage leaves and a retractable spoon for blending) like a quack herbalist.

Feeling better yet? If not, perhaps the Blood Orange Negroni ($24) of Hendrick’s Gin, Solerno blood orange, campri and mancino ross may be the cure from the strains of a grueling work day. Because it totally counts as a dose of Vitamin C right?
