Time To Recontract: 4 New Phones To Place Under Your Radar This Month

Some actually boast really impressive specs

Even if you are an Apple or Samsung Galaxy S fan, you got to admit that the latest models have been looking painfully similar to their predecessors. No doubt while there might have been improvements made in the processors, cameras or the smart capabilities, it makes you question: What are you getting in your next mobile upgrade? Having crossed the midway point of 2018, we have seen the release of many impressive smartphones that can pose a serious challenge to the iPhone and Galaxy S flagship models. Even though some of them are not ridiculously budget, its fresh look and design may just catch your eye.

1. Huawei nova 3i (From $398)

If you have often steered away from mid-range smartphones, fearing that they are inferior in several departments, this might be the phone that catches your eye. Engineered for consumers who are not willing to shell out exorbitant amounts for a phone, the Huawei nova 3i is available from $398.

Design and Display

Those who may be holding onto its predecessor, the nova 2i,  the 3i definitely looks classier with the newly added 2.5D glass on both front and back, giving it a glossy, premium finish. The phone’s glass back is attached to an aluminium-magnesium mid-frame allowing the phone to retain a slim appearance while feeling comfortable to hold in the palm. Equipped with the latest FullView display, the 6.3-inch screen supports full HD+ (2340 X 1080 pixels) and the dynamic 19:5:9 display, covers 85% of the colour spectrum, promising to offer a much pleasurable viewing experience. The Huawei nova 3i is available in two colours – black and iris purple.

Software, Camera and Battery

The Huawei novi 3i is the world’s first smartphone to feature a front-facing dual camera (24MP and 2MP) with AI support. Running on the all-new Kirin 710 system on chip, it is expected to be a substantial upgrade from other budget Huawei phones and those in its tier. Going back to the cameras on the phone, both sets of the front and rear cameras come with a 2MP secondary sensor which is used to capture depth data in order to create a realistic bokeh/background blur effect. With AI technology present, the handset is able to allow even amateurs to take quality, professional looking photos with just a click. The nova 3i comes with a decent 4GB Ram and a storage size of a whopping 128GB. If this is not enough, its microSD card slot can house cards up to 256GB, this is however at the expense of the dual-SIM functionality. The 3340 mAh battery is expected to last the day with substantial juice left for the night which is not too bad.

Conclusion

Overall, the nova 3i proved to be a significant upgrade from its previous versions. It boasts a larger screen, runs on a faster chip, works on greater resolution and comes with improved cameras. At $398 it is definitely positioned at a very competitive price against other mid-range smartphones. Yet, this wonder does come with several tradeoffs including the lack of a USB Type-C port, no dedicated microSD card slot and video stabilisation. For most, however, these downsides are easily looked over, making the Huawei nova 3i seemingly the best amongst the mid-range smartphones.

The Huawei nova 3i is available at all Huawei Concept Stores, local telecommunication operators, selected consumer electronic stores, authorised mobile retailers and selected online marketplaces.
