A resort set on Patong Hill above the city, the Wyndham Sea Pearl channels the vibes of a quiet gated community of homely villas. Almost every unit opens out into a pool view, and mine came with a spacious balcony and private outdoor jacuzzi.

The grounds may initially seem labyrinthine, but it’s easy to grow familiar with the surroundings. Wyndham is just ten minutes by car to Patong city; a shuttle bus operates to and from the resort to the popular Bangla Road of bars, clubs and street stalls.

The resort also offers fuss-free and luxurious yet surprisingly affordable day trips out to the stunning islands of Ko Phi Phi and Ko Hong, with company Blue Anda. We were brought by friendly and chatty guides to uncover the hidden beauty of Ko Hong, which took our breath away with its pristine views and natural sights.

We were chartered around on a clean and well-maintained boat, pampered with cooled drinks and packed snacks and given a hearty lunch on a private beach owned by Blue Anda. Each of us was given an adventure kit stocked with snorkelling gear, a clean towel, a multi-purpose sarong and – very important – all-terrain shoes for braving the rocks, sand and forest floor. The package costs just 4,500 Baht (about $120).

What’s most important is that we had a clean and comfortable room to come back to, and the day was complete with a wind-down hot coconut oil massage session at the Carissa Spa. This was affordable luxury at its most value for money.
