Get to know the rural side of Japan
Yes, it’s true; the Weekender team found ourselves in Japan once again! After exploring Central Japan, Okinawa, and Western Japan, we set out on a rather different adventure this time. We took the Japanese domestic ANA airlines to Kochi Prefecture.
One of the four prefectures in Shikoku Island, Kochi abounds in farms and coastal towns facing the vast Pacific Ocean. With a small population and much fewer tourists compared to other Japanese cities, the natural landscapes and historic remains in Kochi are very well-preserved in their beautiful, original state. Not to mention the food is incredibly fresh and unforgettable. Here are some of our favourite spots that you have to visit when in Kochi.
1. Muroto-Zaki (Cape Muroto)
Couples will have a lovely time at Cape Muroto, located in Moroto city in the east of Kochi. Cape Muroto is known for two romantic landmarks: the white Cape Muroto lighthouse, and the Married Couple Rocks, also known as Meoto Iwa. The pair of rock formations, linked together by a 35-metre-long rope, is most famously found in Mie Prefecture, but there are actually many of the pairs scattered across Japan, including in Cape Muroto. Kick up your feet on the beach and relax to the sound of the crashing waves of the Pacific Ocean. The perfectly round sunrise and sunset above the ocean is an amazing sight to behold.
While you’re in Muroto city, take the chance to explore its other scenic places. Recognised as a UNESCO Global Geopark in 2011, the whole city is a great place to learn about the geology and culture of Kochi Prefecture.
