1. Gion Matsuri

Taking place throughout July, Gion Matsuri is Kyoto’s biggest annual matsuri. As the festival of Yasaka Shrine, the month-long event is centered on a collection of 32 magnificent parade floats known collectively as “yamaboko” (strong man of Yamato), each one requiring more than a dozen people to pull. Visitors can dress in traditional yukata (light cotton kimono) and enjoy festival snacks.
