We Singaporeans love nothing more than good food – and what’s better than learning history through a food trail of our local iconic dishes? Park Regis’ annual #sginsiders trail is back this year with a foodie twist; and thanks to its convenient location near Chinatown, you’ll be taken on a walking tour through four famous homegrown food spots, and uncover the hidden stories behind them!
Held every Saturday at 9.30am, you’ll be taken on a leisurely morning stroll through the culturally-rich Chinatown neighbourhood, with historical landmarks like the Sri Mariamman Temple and the Old Thong Chai Medical Institution.
The food part of the tour will kick off at Hong Lim Market and Food Centre, where you’ll sit down to the iconic and traditional local breakfast set of kaya toast and a piping hot cup of kopi or teh. Finish it off with fresh, hand-made curry puffs from the famous Tanglin Crispy Curry Puff! Manned by a father-son duo, you’ll get to watch them in action kneading and pleating the dough into envelopes of puffs to be baked.
Second stop will be the 83-year-old Cantonese pastry shop, Tong Heng! Known for its diamond-shaped dan-ta (egg tarts), the shop recently revamped their premises to this more colourful, contemporary decor. Sample their melt-in-the-mouth tarts (and perhaps buy a box or two back for yourself!) – they also have traditional Cantonese pastries such as wife biscuits too!
Don’t forget to snap a few photos with the gorgeous murals along the way!
The day we went on the trail, it was horribly hot – as the weather always is here – but no worries, because Mei Heong Yuen Dessert, a Singapore Chinatown Heritage Brand, was our next stop! With a menu offering a huge array of traditional pastes, hot dessert soups and refreshing snow ice bowls; it was no wonder the shop was crowded! The Chendol Snow Ice Bowl was our favourite – blending the contemporary Taiwanese shaved ice with our favourite local dessert, this was fragrant, coconutty, and oh-so-soft! If you have the stomach space, do try the Sesame Paste or Almond Paste too; the shop is famed for them.
Chinese New Year may be over, but our love for bak kwa definitely isn’t! The food trail ends off at the ever-popular Lim Chee Guan, which has its roots dating back to 1938. No need to queue for long hours here: you’ll get to savour their famous sliced bak kwa, not too oily, and a wonderfully fragrant mix of sweet and savoury charred flavours. Perfectly balanced, as it all should be.
