6. Gwangju

The birthplace of the modern Korean Democratic Movement— the city’s history of civil resistance lies preserved at the Square of Democracy, in memory of the May 18 Democratic Uprising in 1980, and the National Cemetery. In recent years, Gwangju also plays host to the annual World Kimchi Culture Festival. For the fashion-forward ones, do check out Chungjang-ro— the city’s major fashion district, for your dose of shopping and cafe culture.
