1.  Miyajima 宮島

Miyajima is one of three scenic views of Japan, and it is also home to the Itsukushima Shrine—a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1996. The allure of this island and its famed shrine stems from the cultural belief that it is the place where God dwells, and the scenery combined with the vermillion-lacquered shrine building—green forest on the back and the blue sea, aptly brings out the Japanese sense of beauty.

The shrine itself has many structures that are considered national treasures, and depending on which season you pop by, the changing tides and scenery add to the mysticism of this site.

While you’re there, don’t forget to check out Daisho-in Temple, the oldest temple in Miyajima, a popular destination for Buddhist pilgrims. Take a hike up Mt Misen to catch the sunrise or sunset, and be rewarded with magnificent views from the summit. Also, catch a traditional Bugaku dance performance, accompanied by dancers in colourful costumes and intricate masks, known as bugakumen.
