5. Kamikochi

Like a picture from a postcard, Kamikochi, with the Hida Mountain Range in the background, and Azusa River and changing autumn leaves in the foreground, is beyond beautiful. Known as the “Japanese Yosemite Valley”, it is also considered one of Japan’s Natural Cultural Assets.

Besides trekking in the midst of lush greenery, visitors can set up camp or stay in a traditional Japanese ryokan (traditional inn). Fun fact: Kappa-bashi, a narrow bridge found in Kamikochi, is named after the legendary green monster known as Kappa, said to inhabit rivers and mountains.

Kamikochi, Matsumoto, Nagano Prefecture, Japan.
