The banker-turned-pet groomer and shop owner’s love has gone to the dogs

There was not a tail between the legs when we visited Pets Eden & Salon, located in the cultural Joo Chiat precinct. Instead, be ready to be greeted by a pack of dogs that will come blundering towards you, thirsty for belly rubs and scratches behind the ears.

Together with her partner Ryan Heng, Charlene Wong left the corporate rat race to start Pets Eden & Salon back in 2013. Their pet foray has since grown by leaps and bounds. earning the store a repute for its top-notch grooming services sought after by pet owners in the vicinity. Aside from being her own boss, Charlene also exemplifies the true meaning of turning passion into profits. But what’s the best part of her job now? She tells us more:

What were you working previously and why the switch?

Previously, I was in the banking line. It was a high-stress environment and I used to work six to seven days a week. The demanding hours also means neglecting my dogs at home. Finally, together with my partner Ryan, I had enough of the corporate life and took a leap to start Pets Eden Spa & Salon. What started out as a teeny tiny online store has now grown to full-fledged business with a team of seven people.

Tell us more about Pets Eden Spa & Salon.

What’s the best part of your job?

I get to bring my dogs to work every day!

What is one thing first-time pet owners should take note of?

Aside from the health and diet, the grooming of the pet is equally important. Many a time, first-time pet owners may disregard this aspect. Therefore, we do have pets comes in for grooming, where we come across things like matted fur, a rash and maybe even a scratch. We usually take pictures to document this and feedback to the owners. As such, we take about 100 to 200 pictures a day with the Canon EOS M100. The camera is user-friendly, we can edit the pictures directly on it. Sometimes, we do that for before-and-after shots to showcase the transformation. The best part is that I can link the camera to my phone and we can upload it to social media directly.

Where will you be when you’re not attending to pets at the store?

I’ll be at the beach with my dogs, where they swim and play fetch.  I use the Canon EOS M100 as it is lightweight and portable to capture our precious moments, which I get to keep forever.
